Methodologically, the case rests on multiple attestation, embarrassment, coherence, and public-site testability — each find is a named, observable venue that anyone in the first century could have falsified. The cumulative pattern, not any single find, carries the argument.

The passage securely describes a composite cross form in late-second-century Christian argument: upright, crossbeam and projection. It does not identify the timber, measurements, assembly sequence or exact apparatus used for Jesus decades earlier.What Tertullian Actually Says
The surviving Latin reads tota crux, “the whole cross,” with its own antenna and sedilis excessus. The sentence occurs while Tertullian argues that the human body and familiar pagan objects contain crosslike lines. His rhetorical purpose is religious defense, yet the analogy depends on a form recognizable to his audience.

What the Seat May Mean

Proposed functions include supporting weight, prolonging exposure or intensifying humiliation. Its shape and frequency remain uncertain, and no surviving cross from Jesus’ execution is available for comparison. need not resemble the later footrest called a suppedaneum. Conflating the two creates false precision. Tertullian’s wording supports a projection near the body; it does not locate it anatomically or establish universal use.
Historical Weight and Limit
This is direct evidence for what one late-second-century Latin author expected readers to recognize, contextual corroboration for multi-element Roman cross forms, and later reception relative to Jesus. It is not direct archaeological evidence and cannot prove the configuration of Jesus’ individual cross.

The Sentence in Its Argument

The comparison is valuable precisely because cross-bearing is not Plutarch’s subject; it appears as recognizable background knowledge.
What Was Carried
The Loeb translation says “cross,” but the underlying stauros remains physically nonspecific. The Puteoli context preserves evidence for municipal execution practices, but Plutarch wrote in Greek and did not use this Latin word; equating the terms is an inference. with procession. Plutarch can corroborate that the condemned carried something called a stauros; reconstructing that object as the crossbeam is plausible when compared with Latin sources, not explicit in this sentence.
Comparison with the Gospels

These accounts need not conflict if Jesus began the procession and Simon later carried the load, but that harmonization is possible rather than narrated in full by any single Gospel.
Historical Weight and Limit
The statement is independent, non-Christian literary context for the cultural intelligibility of penal cross-bearing. It does not independently attest Jesus, Simon, the Jerusalem route or an exact Roman regulation, and the universal “every” belongs to a rhetorical generalization.
Evidence – A Roman-era Greek author uses a condemned person carrying a stauros to execution as an intelligible moral analogy.
Conclusion – Plutarch independently supports the historical plausibility of penal cross-bearing while leaving the carried object’s exact construction unresolved.

The quotation is useful but not self-proving. Smith’s “most common” is not a surviving Roman statistic, and the entry’s theological comments are not independent ancient testimony. In this case, the nail passed through the right calcaneus. It does not establish that both heels were pierced, that the arms were nailed, or that every Roman crucifixion used the same arrangement. Those claims require anatomical reconstruction and comparison with literary evidence.Why the First Reconstruction Was Revised
Tzaferis’ account depended partly on the reconstruction published by Nicu Haas. Haas proposed that both feet were almost parallel and were transfixed by one nail. He also interpreted marks in the forearms as evidence of nailing.

Its later correction is equally important. Scholarly revision did not eliminate the heel nail. Instead, it reduced the claim from a complete and vivid posture to a narrower conclusion that better matches the surviving evidence.
